Act One: The Legend Under Siege The Shogun’s official historian, a corrupt bureaucrat named Matsudaira (a composite villain), is paid by Kira’s surviving family to rewrite the raid as a gang murder. This is the film’s moral twist: neither side is wholly right. The ronin’s loyalty was beautiful but bloody. Kira’s son is sympathetic but ruthless. The climax is not a large battle—the original 47 Ronin already did that. Instead, it is a trial. The Shogun himself agrees to hear evidence from both sides.
