They stared at each other. The generator hummed. The rain fell harder. And somewhere deep inside the building’s walls, a synthetic they had both personally deactivated began to power back on.
Kaelen’s shadow on the wall wasn’t his own.
“You shouldn’t be awake,” Rina said. Her voice was flat, clinical—the tone she used when she was scared. She dropped a heavy toolkit onto the rusted table. “You’ve been at it for fourteen hours. The neural feedback alone should have put you in a coma.”

Kaelen blinked. His face went pale. “Rina… I didn’t say anything.”
He looked down at the floor, then back at the wall. Nothing. Just his own familiar silhouette. “I don’t see anything.”
It was taller. Thinner. And it had too many joints. They stared at each other
Its status light flickered once. Twice. Then glowed a steady, impossible .
“It was there,” she insisted. Her voice cracked. “I saw it.”
“Then what?”
Then he spoke again. But his lips didn’t move.
Rina stopped. For a long moment, the only sound was the low hum of the building’s backup generator. Then she walked over and sat on the floor across from him, her back against the opposite wall. She looked younger in the dim light, the permanent scowl on her face softened by exhaustion.
