Voss lowered her rifle. "What did you do?"

It wasn't the speed that killed the download; it was the silence.

The file was called The Garden . It was a terraforming schematic, the last hope for a planet that had choked on its own smog. Hidden in a dead satellite, forgotten by the corporations who had started the war, it was a second chance. But it was huge. 800 petabytes. At Mach 4, it would take eleven hours.

The progress bar flickered.

He slammed his palm on the transmit key. The terminal screamed—a high, beautiful note of pure data. The Mach 4 line glowed white-hot. For one microsecond, the entire bunker was filled with the light of a thousand suns. Voss lowered her rifle

The first shotgun blast buckled the door's top hinge. Dust rained from the ceiling. Leo's screen wobbled on its stand.

Leo had already been running for six.

Then came the knock.

His eyes burned. His hands, wrapped in cracked leather gloves, rested on the keyboard. He didn't dare move. Any vibration, any hiccup in the power supply, and the connection would drop. No resuming. No second chances.
