Unlike other heroes of the era who were perfect from the jump, Ash was a ten-year-old who had to learn that "Guts" doesn't beat strategy. Watching him earn the Boulder Badge via a sprinkler system (cheating, Ash, technically cheating) set the tone: this journey would be scrappy, weird, and unpredictable.
