Quark eventually relaxed the system in later versions, moving to simpler serial numbers as Adobe InDesign began its rise. But for those who lived through it, the Validation Code was a ghost in the machine—a reminder that in the age of physical media and dial-up support, owning the CD wasn’t enough.
