Duke’s defining characteristic is that he is terrible at talking to girls. He tries to woo Olivia with a speech about "goat cheese," and it fails spectacularly. His chemistry with "Sebastian" is hilarious because he keeps asking, "Why are you so good at giving me advice about girls?" We know. The audience knows. The goat cheese knows. But Tatum plays the confusion with such earnest puppy-dog energy that you forgive the character for being dense. There is a scene that elevates the film from "fluff" to "cult classic." Viola, still disguised as Sebastian, confronts the school’s snobby principal about why the girls’ soccer team was cut. "Just because you're a girl, you're expected to act a certain way... You have to like pink, and dolls, and dancing, and boys. And when you grow up, you have to act a certain way. You have to be quiet, and nice, and polite, and you have to pretend everything boys do is fascinating." Yes, she is in a fake mustache. Yes, she just fell out of a tree. But the speech lands. It is a genuine, unfiltered feminist rant hiding inside a movie where a girl punches a dude in the face for smelling bad. It gives the entire chaotic premise an emotional anchor. 5.
